PTFE fluoropolymer (Xylan 1424)
The blue coating you see on every offshore flange. A fluoropolymer film that does two jobs at once: it stops corrosion and it gives a low, repeatable friction coefficient so torque actually converts into bolt load.

What it does well
- Repeatable torque-to-tension: the reason it is specified on critical joints, not the colour
- Eliminates galling on stainless studs, which otherwise seize and have to be cut off
- Applied cold, so no hydrogen embrittlement risk on high-strength grades
- Comes off cleanly at disassembly even after years in seawater
Where it falls short
- Soft film — it scrapes if studs are dragged across a deck or thrown into a bin
- Costs several times more than zinc plating
- The friction advantage is lost if the installer adds grease on top of it
Specify it when
Offshore and subsea flanges, sour service, stainless bolting, and any joint tightened with a calibrated torque or tensioning tool.
