B16Stud bolt

ASTM A193 Grade B16

The high-temperature grade. Vanadium raises the creep resistance so the joint keeps its bolt load up to 538 °C — steam lines, reformer flanges and hot hydrogen service where B7 would relax.

Base material
Chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy steel
Heat treatment condition
Quenched and tempered at 650 °C minimum
Hardness, max
321 HBW / 35 HRC maximum

Service temperature

-29 °C+538 °C−273+900 °C

Chosen over B7 whenever the design temperature passes 427 °C. Pair with A194 grade 4 or grade 7 nuts, not 2H, when the standard calls for it.
